PROGRAM DESCRIPTIONS:

By scrolling below you will see that I offer two main types of adult dog training programs: One-on-One programs where you do most of the work with my help & Board and Train programs where I do most of the work. My Puppy programs, as well as virtual sessions, shadow programs, boarding and day camp information are toward the bottom of this page. (Please note: If you are are struggling with aggression/reactivity, severe separation anxiety or fear, I will recommend the board and train program for best results.)

PRIVATE one-on-one Session Programs

20170517_163427.jpg

These one-on-one programs are for the dog owner that wants to do the intensive foundation work with my guidance. Rather than be solely food-focused or suppression-based, we will utilize structured play, off-leash freedom, appropriate dog-dog play, high value treats, and more as the foundation to teach your dog all of his/her obedience. I will recognize what truly motivates your dog and build upon it to make training and learning fun for your dog. By finding what reinforces your dog to use as reward in training, I will create habits so that your dog will WANT to work WITH you. As well, I will be teaching you and your dog very clear and effective communication techniques through classical and operant conditioning, so that your dog understands what is expected in a very clear and concise way.

With one-on-one training, your dog will not only learn basic commands such as Sit, Down, Place, Heel, and Come, but he/she will also learn to have a balanced state of mind so that you can take your dog anywhere. You will learn about dog training tools, dog body language, basic leadership techniques, and how to become the owner your dog needs you to be.

This is for the person that wants to be heavily involved in the training. The dog owner will be doing about 80% of the training work; including engaging your dog in lessons and repetitive exercises multiple times a day, practicing daily leadership concepts, and learning how to motivate your dog so that they want perform the behaviors you like, as well as teaching them how to stop doing behaviors you don’t like. I will show you the basics and the fundamentals, and you work with your dog multiple times a day to get the results you want.

PLEASE NOTE: This program is NOT for dogs that display any aggression toward humans, dogs, or other animals. Or for dogs that have extreme separation anxiety or fear. Only happy-go-lucky dogs are welcome in private one-on-one sessions. For the “other” dogs, they must be enrolled in a board and train program in order to receive the intervention they need. (In rare cases, I make exceptions to this rule and offer an 8-session **Behavior Modification Private One-on-One Program on a case by case basis - for more info, please read the description for the “Off-Leash Obedience” program description below).

On-Leash Obedience (Private Session Program):

This program is only for non-aggressive or non-reactive dogs*. This four session program covers basic obedience commands including:

  • Heel

  • Down

  • Sit

  • Place

During the first session I will assess your dog and begin working one-on-one with them to teach specific obedience commands. At some point during the full program, I will bring you into the training process, but I will first give your dog a head start. My approach to dog training addresses the state of mind of your dog rather than strictly focusing on creating rehearsed behaviors. In other words, I am much more concerned with creating a happy, respectful, balanced dog, than creating a dog that simply knows a few obedience commands. If your goal is to have a well-mannered leashed dog, yet want to be included in the work, this is the program for you. Clients that complete this program often sign up for the off-leash program at a later date to have 100% off-leash reliability in any situation. **Please be aware that this program is not for dogs that have major issues such as resource guarding, aggression, and/or severe reactivity.

$1000 for four 90-120 minute sessions. (Price includes a Herm Sprenger training collar and email/phone training support for the life of your dog in regards to the issues/methods discussed and practiced during the program.)

*This program IS NOT for dog-aggression or human-aggression cases.

Off-Leash Obedience (Private Session Program):

20171107_110510(0).jpg

This program is only for non-aggressive or non-reactive dogs*. This six session program provides off-leash voice control for your dog and covers basic obedience commands including:

  • Heel

  • Down

  • Sit

  • Place

  • Come

During the first session I will assess your dog and begin working one-on-one with them to teach specific obedience commands. At some point during the full program, I will bring you into the training process, but I will first give your dog a head start. My approach to dog training addresses the state of mind of your dog rather than strictly focusing on creating rehearsed behaviors. In other words, I am much more concerned with creating a happy, respectful, balanced dog, than creating a dog that simply knows a few obedience commands. If your goal is to have dependable off-leash freedom (inside and outside) yet want to be included in the work, this is the program for you. **Please be aware that this program is not for dogs that have major issues such as resource guarding, aggression, and/or severe reactivity.

$1500 for six 90-120 minute sessions, including email and phone training support for the life of your dog.

Price DOES NOT include the Ecollar Technologies brand “Mini-Educator” upgraded with winged hypoallergenic contact points and a bungee strap for a more comfortable fit. No need to get one before you come to train with me as I will purchase this for you with my professional deal. Cost of e-collar ranges from $250 (for most dogs) and $280 (for very large or special circumstances.) As well, you may be asked to purchase a Herm Sprenger training collar from me ($30-35 depending on your dogs size).

Price DOES include email and phone training support for the life of your dog.

*This program IS NOT available as a behavior modification program for dog-aggression or human-aggression cases. However, I do offer a longer version of this program for qualifying behavior modification cases….

**Behavior Modification Private One-on-One Program - 8 sessions for $2000. I will determine if you and your dog will qualify for this program via an in-person consultation or through provided detailed videos of the problem behaviors you are experiencing. If you are interested in this program and want to know if you and your dog will qualify, please let me know in your inquiry submission form and we will discuss at the preliminary phone consult. Again, not every dog will qualify. Most will be required to enroll in the the Behavior Modification Board and Train Program (listed below).

Off-Leash Recall / “Come” command (Private Session Program):

20171130_104400.jpg

This program is ONLY for decently trained, happy-go-lucky, non-aggressive/reactive adult dogs. It is for the dedicated dog owner that wants 100% recall 100% of the time, in any situation. If your dog is fairly well-trained and you want to go to e-collar freedom but don't know how to do it or are afraid of "ruining" your dog, this is the program for you. The freedom and peace of mind you will find in having your dog come every time you call is irreplaceable. It may even save your dog's life. I offer two options: In three 100-minute sessions, I introduce your dog to the amazing world of low-level remote collar training, provide you with instruction and a working knowledge of how to use it with your dog, and together we teach your dog to recall in all situations. OR - I board your dog for 3 or 4 days and teach the basics of recall and condition them to the e-collar stimulation for recall. Either way, you can have the dog that comes back to you 100% of the time, no matter what the distraction is; cat, deer, squirrel, another dog, you name it!

**Please be aware that this program is not for dogs that have major issues such as resource guarding, aggression, and/or severe reactivity. To be sure that your dog is right for this very short program I need to make sure that s/he is absolutely non-reactive/aggressive toward other dogs, animals or humans. Because of this, I require a 15 min in-person consultation of the dog or, at the very minimum, a phone conversation to discuss your dog’s personality and behaviors in depth. If you are unsure about questionable behaviors your dog may display, please get a video of it meeting unfamiliar people and/or dogs and you can send it to me after our initial phone consultation.

3-SESSION OFF LEASH RECALL: I work solo with your dog in the first two sessions, then you came in for the 3rd session where we all work together. Cost: $800 for three 90-120 min sessions. *After meeting you and your dog, I may say that this is not the program for you.

3-DAY OFF LEASH RECALL INTENSIVE w/ BOARDING: I do the work while boarding your dog for 3 days/2 nights and they get a little extra leadership work from me. This is ideal for the person going out of town for a few days and needs boarding AND wants some training for their dog. Cost: $1200. *Your dog must be fully crate trained and not exhibit any separation anxiety. After meeting you and your dog, I may say that this is not the program for you. Space is very limited for this program.

Price DOES NOT include the Ecollar Technologies brand “Mini-Educator” upgraded with winged hypoallergenic contact points and a bungee strap for a more comfortable fit. No need to get one before you come to train with me as I will purchase this for you with my professional deal. Cost of e-collar ranges from $250 (for most dogs) and $280 (for very large or special circumstances.)

Price DOES include email and phone training support for the life of your dog.

*This program IS NOT for for dogs that display any reactivity or aggression toward other dogs, animals or humans!!

Board-and-Train Programs

These programs are for the dog owner that does not want to do the intensive foundation work but wants a calm and well-mannered dog - OR - for the dog owner that has a severely reactive or aggressive dog and/or struggles with separation anxiety. Board-and-train programs specialize in e-collar communication using a state-of-the-art electronic collar. (E-collars of today are a humane and effective approach to dog training and are nothing like those of the old days). During the program I will recognize what truly motivates your dog and build upon it to make training and learning fun for your dog. Rather than be solely food-focused or suppression-based, I will utilize structured play, off-leash freedom, appropriate dog-dog play, high value treats, and more as the foundation to teach your dog all of his/her obedience. By finding what reinforces your dog to use as reward in training, I will create habits so that your dog will go home and WANT to work WITH you. As well, I will be using very clear and effective communication techniques through classical and operant conditioning, so that your dog understands what is expected in a very clear and concise way. All of these concepts will become the basis to teach your dog about cooperation, rules, boundaries, consequences and is an amazing way to transfer the learning back to you.

If you are interested in a Board and Train program: Please fill out the contact form and sign up for a phone consultation. Please note: The only way to confirm specific board and train program dates is when I receive a deposit from you

For dogs with any behavior issues, please read our House Rules to better understand the boundaries and rules that will be required of you to implement with your dog at home. Dogs with human or dog aggression will be discussed on a case by case basis.

HOUSE RULES:

For the best possible success of the Board and Train program, you must be willing to implement the house rules for 30-90 days after the go-home session -

1.     Dog must be crated at night and when you are not at home.

2.    If your dog is here for a behavior modification program (depending on the severity of issues), your dog may not be allowed access to human furniture (bed, couch, chairs, etc) until the relationship is back in balance. These privileges will be earned back at that time.

3.    The dog’s owner must provide the dog with a structured day (including: play time, structured walks/hikes, duration work, waiting for food, waiting at thresholds, consistent e-collar use, etc.)

4.   Dogs that are here for behavior modification programs are not allowed to initiate any other dog or small child interaction. The same applies for children - they are not allowed to initiate any interaction with the dog unless agreed upon by me. Exceptions are made depending on the demeanor of the dog as well as the age and demeanor of the child. Safety of the child and/or the success of the program may be at risk.

These are not permanent rules, but ones that must be implemented until your dog is behaving the way you would like to see him/her do. They can earn privileges back by making better decisions through your leadership and consistency with the structures and boundaries of the Board and Train (B&T). The best way for you and your dog to be successful is to implement these rules for at least 30-90 days from the go-home. The length depends on the severity of your dog’s ill-behaviors before the B&T and the consistency you provide after the B&T; 30 to 60 days for the 3-week basic and at least 90 days for behavior modification cases. If you have any questions or concerns about these rules, please ask!

3-week Board and Train Program (non-aggressive dogs only):

This program IS NOT for dog-aggression and/or human-aggression cases, or dogs that display any signs of separation anxiety*, or display moderate to severe fear reactivity. Puppy Training program:

10-day Puppy Hybrid Program (On-Leash obedience):

ONLY for puppies that are between 4-6 months old.

This is a great option for new puppy owners looking to create a well-behaved and balanced dog. I will help you build a solid foundation with your puppy so that s/he will be well on their way to becoming the dog you always dreamed of having. This is an ideal program for a puppy as they get to have exposure to new people and experiences, but still see you and stay with you at night to remain bonded to you and your family. (ON-LEASH ONLY! Off-leash work is not included with this program.)

In this program, your puppy will begin learning basic obedience commands including, but not limited to:

20170111_162815.jpg
  • Introduction to structured play (this will be the basis for most of the teaching and maintaining obedience)

  • Walking politely on leash

  • Sit

  • Down

  • Drop command

  • Introduction to recall (“come”) using a long-line for safety

  • Waiting for food

  • Crate training

  • Treadmill work

  • Threshold manners (waiting at doors, in/out of cars, crate, etc.)

HOW DOES THIS HYBRID PROGRAM WORK? The first few days of this program will be you and your puppy working with me in a 75-90 minute session where I will introduce the concept of structured play (which will be the foundation to teach your dog all of his/her obedience and to create a lifelong habit of your dog WANTING to work WITH you). I will also help you structure your day so that you can meet the needs of the pup and so that bad habits don’t start. At some point after those first few days, we will transition to your dog coming to my facility for 1:1 day training with me (approximately 4-5 hours a day) where s/he will be socialized with appropriate dogs, join in on pack walks, and learn basic obedience from me. During this phase you will drop off your dog to me at a specified time and then return at a specified time to take them home with you for the night. At the end of each training day you may be given homework to practice before the next session. In some cases, your dog will stay over for a few nights (if this would be in the best interest for his/her training). This program can take place over 2 weeks or 2 months, depending on your commitment and time availability.

Included with the program is a Herm Sprenger training collar, a favorite toy or treat, and a 90-minute Go-Home session where I will transfer information, techniques, and strategies to ensure continued success.

If you are from out of town: I can modify this program to accommodate the fact that you are not local. It would require you to spend 2-3 nights in Durango at a dog-friendly hotel at the beginning of the program, and at least 1 night at the end of the program in a dog-friendly hotel. (How many nights at the hotel before and after the program depends on your puppy’s needs/issues). Your dog will stay with me in-between your drop off and pick-up in a board and train scenario. Please let me know that you are from out of town on the contact form and we will discuss it during the consultation call.

ADVENTURE DOG! Day Camp:

20171207_104327.jpg

I genuinely understand how hard it can be to properly exercise your dog. Work, family and other obligations often get in the way of fulfilling your dogs need for exercise. It's sometimes easy to ignore, but it's up to you as a dog owner to make sure your pup gets the off-leash freedom they need to enjoy a healthy, happy and fulfilling life. Add in the social component of a friendly pack and your dog will have a chance to bond and build trust with both dogs and people! Your pup will have fun skiing, biking and hiking around the Durango area. I post photos or video updates of your dog on my Facebook page so you can see him/her in action: having fun and receiving some much needed structure during the day. This is the perfect outlet for a dog owner who wants more than just a walk for their furry friend!

Dog Trainer SHADOW PROGRAM:

20180114_110752.jpg

If you are a dog industry professional that is looking to better your training skills, then my Shadow Program may be exactly what you are looking for. I only take one shadow student at a time so that I can create an experience tailored to you and you specific needs and goals.

During the shadow program you will have an opportunity to be hands on with the board and train dogs, as well as observe Cheryl conduct private lessons and client interactions. You will experience the in’s and out’s of training all types of dogs - from puppies to aggressive dogs that are here for a behavior modification program. In addition, you may accompany Cheryl on her one-of-a-kind Adventure Dog! Day Camp to see how she runs a large off-leash pack adventure. There will also be time to review the business end of things as well if that is something that interests you.

Rather than a “one-size fits all approach”, Cheryl will start by finding out what your needs are for attending a shadow program and from there she will tailor your program to meet your specific dog training goals. In addition, Cheryl will help you understand classical and operant conditioning - including how to use it effectively and efficiently; show you how to engage a dog so that it will WANT to train and work with you (using Ivan Balabanov's Training Without Conflict techniques); answer any questions you may have related to her successful business model; and help you create a “next-steps” list to refer to once your time with her is complete.

Shadow programs typically run five days at a minimum, but can be lengthened to meet your specific needs (dependent upon the dogs that are here). A day usually runs from 9am - 5pm and you will spend your time not only watching Cheryl work with dogs, but also participating hands-on (with her guidance) in the training of the dogs that are currently here in programs. Cheryl reserves approximately 45 minutes at the end of each working day to debrief the daily activities and answer any questions that didn’t get addressed during the training day.

For more information, please fill out the inquiry form and schedule a complimentary phone consultation.
